Star Stuck

When opportunity calls, do you go for it, or let it go?

I’m just curious, have you ever had a moment where you wanted to do something, but you were too shy to go for it? The following story illustrates the importance of just doing the thing that you’re hesitant to do. Might help you overcome that fear, might not.

Wayne was at a carnival, waiting for his brother to finish riding the tilt-a-whirl. As he looked around, he saw a familiar face in the distance. He thought, ‘no, that can’t be her.’ Yet he continued to stare.

A couple rushed over to the woman and spoke to her. When they left, the woman walked a few steps closer to Wayne. Another person ran over to her with a notebook in his hand. That confirmed it: Wayne was standing about 20 yards away from the famous singer, Zelinah.

Wayne felt a tap on the shoulder and looked to see his brother standing there. “Phillip, look who it is.”

Phillip looked where his brother was pointing and his eyes shot open. “Zelinah!” he exclaimed. “Zelinah’s here! At a local carnival? I got to get her autograph!” The man was bouncing on his toes with every word.

“Come on, Phillip. People ask her that all the time. I’m sure she gets tired of it.”

“Are you kidding? Celebrities love hearing from fans. I got to get my CD out of the car. Hold on.” Phillip ran full speed away before Wayne could stop him.

With a sigh, Wayne watched even more fans approach Zelinah. From his angle, she did look happy to sign autographs and take pictures for them. He wanted to go over and get his picture taken with her.

Then again,” Wayne thought, “what if she’s just pretending to be nice? What if joining the crowd would bother her even more?’

Phillip sprinted right past Wayne and presented his CD to Zelinah. The two of them smiled and had a brief conversation that Wayne couldn’t hear. He then gave his phone to another woman to take a picture. When that was done, Phillip shook Zelinah’s hand and they parted ways. With a huge smile, Phillip returned to his brother.

“Check it out,” he said, handing Wayne the phone and CD.

Enviously, Wayne looked at the picture. There was Zelinah and his brother, smiling with their arms over each others’ shoulder. Then he looked at the cover of the pop star’s album. It had been marked, “Phillip, You’re Awesome! Love, Zelinah!” That’s when Wayne finally got his nerve up.

“Do you think she’ll take a picture with me?”

“I don’t know. Why don’t you go see?”

Wayne pulled his own phone out of his pocket and turned around. He saw people walking in all directions. Zelinah was nowhere to be found. He headed back the way his brother came, scanning the crowd. Even when he stood in the spot where Zelinah was standing when he first noticed her, he couldn’t find the singer.

There’s an old saying that if you don’t ask, the answer is no. Just like that, you may have missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Make a nice day!
